Preserving Meat

When you come home from the grocery store with a whole bunch of food, one thing that will be important is that you end up eating the food before it goes bad – and because of the fact that meat can go bad more quickly than other foods, this is one area where this is especially important. Your freezer, of course, will be your best ally in ensuring that your meat does not go bad – but because there are so many different types of meat, there are also different ways you must go about preserving this meat, so here are a few of the more common meats to help you get started!

Chicken: The main thing you will need to know about chicken is that the meat will freeze together if you put it in the freezer with the pieces touching; chicken can be frozen raw or cooked, but either way, the best way to store it – regardless of whether it is chicken legs, breasts, thighs, or slices – is to make sure each piece is individually wrapped, or is in its own bag.

Hamburger: You should freeze hamburger raw, but you should also put the hamburger meat into patties before you freeze it; the hamburger meat you bring home from the store will probably have been refrigerated, so make your hamburger patties, wrap them individually, then throw them into the freezer.

Sandwiches: There are a lot of people who do not realize that sandwiches can go into the freezer (or, at least, they do not think of this!), but this is a great way for you to be able to buy a lot of deli meat at once without having to worry about all of it going bad; make your sandwiches first, wrap them individually, and toss them in the freezer, and then you will simply need to move a sandwich to the refrigerator the day before you plan to eat it, and when you are ready to eat it you can pop it into the toaster oven! In this way, you will be able to keep deli meat far longer than the week or two in which you normally have to eat it, and you will have a delicious sandwich waiting for you when you are ready to eat it!
